An adventure on the dry-stone route: Historical hikes in the Tramuntana mountains

The route Piedra en Seco is one of the best-known and best-preserved hiking excursions on the island of Mallorca. It is a very well signposted path that stretches for 271 kilometres and passes through the mountains of the Serra de la Tramuntana. One of the best experiences for your holidays is to choose a section and take part in this adventure, but do you dare to do the whole of it?

At ROIG, we know that some of the places where this route begins are quite inaccessible. For this reason, we recommend that you choose car hire in Mallorca and enjoy the route Piedra en Seco.

Discovering the Piedra en Seco route: origins and significance

The Serra de la Tramuntana is probably not as well-known as the main beaches of Mallorca, but it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Cultural Landscape category in 2011. It is a mountainous formation that stretches for about 90 kilometres.

In the landscape of the Serra, we can find traces of the different civilisations that have inhabited the island in the past and have shaped what has become our land today. Here we discover the delicate balance that exists between man’s production needs and how he modified nature to use its natural resources.

The Tramuntana mountain range is also full of hiking trails of great scenic beauty that will take you to places with a history of their own. Along the way, you will travel back in time to the time of the Arabs, learn about the smuggling routes and find out how landowners demarcated the margins of their lands – without a doubt one of the best things to do in Mallorca!

Landscapes and heritage: What awaits us along the way

To follow the Piedra en Seco route you must follow the GR221. This route will allow you to discover the places marked out with ancient margins that have been restored over time to keep them in perfect condition.

It is an accessible route, suitable for all types of hikers, from the most experienced to beginners. The best thing about this excursion is that, thanks to the good weather in Mallorca, the trails can be done at any time of the year.

As mentioned, the entire route is 271 kilometres in total and is divided into 8 daily stages. You can choose to do just one or dare it and live the whole experience. These are the stages of the dry-stone route:

    • Stage 1: Port d’Andratx – la Trapa
    • Stage 2: La Trapa – Estellencs
    • Stage 3: Banyalbufar – Esporles
    • Stage 4: Esporles – Can Boi
    • Stage 5: Can Boi – Muleta
    • Stage 6: Muleta – Es Tossals Verds
    • Stage 7: Es Tossals Verds – Son Amer
    • Stage 8: Son Amer – Pollença

Many of the starting or end points of the route are not served by public transport, so we recommend that you choose one of our premium services at ROIG, such as chauffeur-driven car hire in Mallorca, so that a professional driver will take you to the starting point and pick you up at the end point.
