This year, the Fira del Ram will begin on 23 February and will run until 7 April, to welcome spring, as it should.

Historical origins of the Fira del Ram

Nowadays, the Fira del Ram in Palma has become a kind of amusement park that is set up every year for these festivities. But this has not always been the case.

The Feria del Ramo, or Bouquet Fair, has its origins when a sculpture of the Veronica, bearer of the relic of the Santa Faz (Holy Face), arrived on the island. It is not known exactly when or how this image arrived in Palma. However, tradition has it that Cardinal Antoni Cerdà sent this statue from Rome to the nuns of the Santa Margarita monastery.

However, historians believe that the relic was sent by the Roman cardinal Jaume Pou Berard, who had a sister in the monastery.

It is not clear, therefore, when and by whom the sculpture arrived in Palma, but what is clear is that it came directly from the eternal city.

Every spring, the people would go to visit the statue in the monastery, until it became too small, and they had to invade the streets of the city. This is how the Fira del Ram in Palma came to live, one of the best things to do in Mallorca during your stay on the island.

Typical gastronomy of the Fira del Ram: flavours of Mallorca

The Fira del Ram is a festival with a great gastronomic tradition. Most families and friends get together to buy and taste the typical recipes, year after year, and this festival would be nothing without a good portion of food!

These are the most outstanding products that you can find at the fair’s stalls:

    • Crespells: These dried pastries in the shape of stars, flowers or moons are the delight of sweet lovers.
    • Rubiols: This is a sweet dough like a pastry, filled with jam, angel’s hair, ricotta or chocolate.

Frit: It is the union of a wide variety of fried foods to produce a mixture of flavours.
