Day 1: visit Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands, is a perfect destination for tourists, thanks to its pleasant climate throughout the year – the average annual temperature is 18 °C – and its extensive range of monuments. Surprised? This may have caught your attention, as the city of Palma is the gateway to the iconic Playa de Palma for many people. Nevertheless, the streets of Majorca have a millenary history, woven by the heritage of Christian kings and brave sailors. Would you like to discover all its treasures during the first day of your trip to Majorca?

Among the things to visit in Palma de Mallorca, its inspiring old town stands out, with a medieval layout of narrow streets, and where the main monuments of Palma de Mallorca are concentrated. In this part of the city, where the Majorcan nobility lived, there are houses that are authentic palaces, as well as houses with beautiful patios, churches and convents.

Among the many things to see in Palma, the imposing cathedral of Santa Maria, La Seu, stands out. It was built in Gothic style and features pieces created by Antoni Gaudí and Miguel Barceló. In any case, its main distinguishing feature is the spectacular Gothic rosette window that presides over its façade, considered to be the largest in the world. Very close by are the S’Hort del Rei gardens, reminiscent of the Generalife gardens of the Alhambra in Granada, and the Almudaina Palace, the former residence of the Majorcan monarchs. Other monuments in Palma that should be discovered are Sa Llotja, a masterpiece of civil Gothic art; the Episcopal Palace, which houses the Diocesan Museum of Mallorca; the Arab baths, one of the few vestiges of Muslim domination on the island, and Bellver Castle, located 2.5 km from the city of Palma and one of the very few examples of circular castles that have survived to the present day.

Of course, Palma is also an ideal option to try the typical dishes of Majorca, or to have a drink while enjoying magnificent views of the sea. You can also visit the emblematic l’Olivar market, surrounded by bars, as well as the attractive Plaça Major.

Day 2: see the Tramuntana mountains and the north of Majorca

We continue our tour through the proposals on what to see in Majorca in 3 days discovering the interior of the island. To do so, we recommend you get behind the wheel of your rental car and head for the Tramuntana mountains, which have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2011. Some of the most beautiful villages of Majorca await you there. For example, Valldemossa, known for its Carthusian monastery, where the couple formed by Frédéric Chopin and George Sand stayed. Or Deià, a town considered by many to be the most charming on the island, due to its examples of popular stone architecture. About 15 km away is Sóller, a town surrounded by orange plantations and crossed by picturesque pedestrian streets. Among its main attractions are the traditional Sóller train and Can Prunera, a modernist estate that houses one of the best museums in Majorca.

From Sóller, head for Cap Formentor, the northernmost point of Majorca and one of the most visited places on the island due to the beauty of the landscapes that combine sea and mountains. In your rental car, you will arrive in just three quarters of an hour from Sóller. You can also take advantage of your trip to the north of the island to visit two other essential destinations in the north of Majorca. On the one hand, peaceful Pollença, located near the ancient Roman city of Pollentia, of which interesting ruins have been preserved; on the other hand, Alcúdia, which dazzles the newcomer with its imposing medieval wall, presided over by some very beautiful gates.

If your escape to Majorca coincides with the summer months, go to Platja de Muro, where you will find an extensive beach with white sand and intense blue waters, with all the services and numerous restaurants just a few meters away. Can you imagine?

Day 3: tour the southeast of Mallorca

We finish with our suggestions on what to see in Majorca in 3 days encouraging you to explore the southeast of the island, one of its main tourist attractions. This area is home to some of the best caves in Majorca, such as the Artà caves in the municipality of Manacor and the Coves del Drach, which are approximately one and a half hours away from Palma. They are four large caves connected to each other, being the most impressive on the island. During the visit to the caves, you will have the opportunity of taking a boat trip and admire the Martel Lake, one of the largest underground lakes in Europe.

After visiting the caves, head for the small port of Porto Colom or Portocolom, which you will reach in about 20 minutes. Take the opportunity to visit the old part of the town, as well as its marina. For lunch, we recommend you choose one of the local restaurants that open their doors in front of the Mediterranean. After lunch, you can continue your route around Mallorca by going to Cala Figuera, one of the most recommended coves in Majorca.

To put the finishing touch to your tour by car around Majorca, you can also go to Es Trenc beach to admire one of the most hypnotic sunsets on the island.
