Crossing the island from coast to mountains can turn into a scenic journey that reveals the richness and diversity of its landscapes.

At ROIG Mobility & Experiences, we suggest several routes along Mallorca’s roads. They’ll take you from the calm of the coast to the mountains that shape the horizon, and they’re one of the best answers to the question of what to do in Mallorca if you enjoy driving.

Driving the Ma-10: a scenic journey through the Serra de Tramuntana

The Ma-10 is the road that runs through the Serra de Tramuntana from end to end. Its 112 km link Andratx, in the south-west, with Pollença, in the north-east, passing through Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Esporles, Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, Fornalutx, and Escorca. That makes it a perfect base for planning your route. To reach all its villages, whether on the coast or in the mountains, the most practical option is car hire in Mallorca. On public transport, you’d lose a good chunk of your holiday just getting from place to place.

We won’t pretend otherwise: it’s a winding road, with many kilometres of bends and a speed limit of 60 km/h along its entire length. But the natural beauty waiting for you at every stop is unique and well worth it. These are some essential stops on your route along the Ma-10, or very close to it:

Valldemossa

Deià

Sóller and Port de Sóller

Fornalutx

Sa Calobra, via the Ma-2141 turn-off

Lluc

Pollença

From Palma to Valldemossa: the grand road into the mountains

The drive from Palma to Valldemossa is short but impressive. You head into the Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca’s mountain range, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. This is the usual route, along with some of its highlights:

Leaving Palma: from the capital, take the Ma-20 ring road and exit at the Valldemossa / UIB sign to join the Ma-1110, the Valldemossa road.

Climbing into the Tramuntana: as you head deeper into the range, you’ll find yourself surrounded by hills and mountains. The road winds through woodland, olive groves, and almond orchards.

Panoramic viewpoints: in this area, you’ll find several viewpoints with spectacular views of the coast and the mountains. Stop at the ones that catch your eye, take a few photos, and enjoy the scenery.

Arriving in Valldemossa: after about 17 km, you’ll reach this picturesque village, known for its cobbled streets, stone houses, and the Cartuja de Valldemossa. The composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838-1839 there.

Detour via Esporles: if you have more time, you can head back along the Ma-10 towards the south-west and turn off for Esporles, a charming village of cobbled streets and stone houses.

If you’d rather take it easy on holiday but don’t want to miss these landscapes, have a look at our Premium chauffeur-driven car service in Mallorca. From Sóller, the Ma-10 climbs north through the heart of the mountains. Close to Escorca, you’ll reach the turn-off for the Ma-2141, which many consider the most beautiful road on the island. It drops around 700 m over roughly 13 km of hairpin bends, including the famous nus de sa corbata (tie knot), where the road loops back over itself. It’s an ideal route for making the most of car hire deals in Mallorca and driving it at your own pace. Here are a few stops worth considering:

Port de Sóller: a good starting point. You can stroll along the seafront, enjoy the sea views, and try the local cuisine. If you fancy it, ride up to Sóller on the historic wooden tram, which has linked the town with the port since 1913.

Mirador de Ses Barques: on the Ma-10, shortly after leaving Sóller, this viewpoint offers one of the best panoramas of the valley and the port.

Sa Calobra: getting here is an experience in itself. This small cove of shingle and pebbles is surrounded by towering cliffs. From there, pedestrian tunnels carved into the rock lead you to the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis, a deep gorge where the mountains meet the sea. If you enjoy hiking in Mallorca, this is one of its most spectacular landscapes.

A practical tip: the car park at Sa Calobra is paid and has just over 300 spaces. In high season it fills up easily, and once it’s full, cars are diverted to Cala Tuent. Your best bet is to arrive first thing in the morning or to visit outside high season. If you’d rather not drive the final stretch, Sa Calobra can also be reached by sea on a boat trip.

Hassle-free planning: tips for your road trip in Mallorca

Some of these routes can be done in a single day, but for others it’s worth stopping overnight halfway so you can enjoy them without rushing. When you land at the airport, you have three options: pick up your hire car straight away, book a transfer to take you to your hotel, or arrange a taxi in Mallorca. If you choose the car, our free shuttle bus will be waiting for you at the arrivals terminal to take you to our Son Oms office, just five minutes away. And if you’re starting your route in the north, you can also collect it from our Alcúdia office, very close to Pollença.

Once you’re settled in, follow these tips to plan your road trip in Mallorca:

Plan your route: study it in advance, on paper maps or in navigation apps.

Choose the right vehicle: a compact car is easier to handle on narrow, winding roads like the Ma-10 or the road down to Sa Calobra. If you’re after something special, a convertible turns the route into an unforgettable memory.

Check road conditions: do this before setting off, especially on mountain roads. The Ma-10 is occasionally closed for sporting events, and in the mountains you’ll often come across cyclists.

Allow for driving times and breaks: work out the real driving time between each stop, as the bends make journeys longer. Take regular breaks to rest and enjoy the scenery.

Book your accommodation: if you’re staying overnight along the way, book in advance, especially in tourist areas or in high season. Choose places with parking so you have somewhere to leave your vehicle.

Follow the rules of the road: find out about the traffic and parking rules in each area, as well as the speed limits on mountain roads.

After this scenic journey along Mallorca’s roads, you’re bound to be itching to start planning your getaway.
